Home Renovations: Choosing New Inside Doors

Once the mortgage was paid in full, I decided to make some changes to my family's house. That included investing in new doors throughout the home. That proved to be more complicated than I expected. With the help of a contractor, I explored options for bedroom doors that were built to reduce noise. There was the option of using French doors in some areas to allow more natural light into the space. I also learned a lot about door locks and where they would do the most good. If you want to replace all the doors in your home, let's talk. I'll share the tips that my contractor provided. With a little luck, those same tips will save you some time and effort.

Common Problems with Your Automatic Garage Doors: When It's Time to Call in a Repair Person

Blog

You probably don't think much about your automatic garage door—until the door malfunctions. While the solution can be a simple fix, such as unblocking a sensor or restoring power, there are bigger problems that can occur with your garage doors. If you are having problems getting your garage door to stay open, if the track has become warped, or if the door won't stay open, it's time to get an inspection done by a qualified repair person.

Problem Solving on Your Own

When your garage door won't open, first check to see whether there is a problem with the circuit breaker that leads to the garage door. Many times there is no problem with your garage door, but there is simply no power. If the circuit hasn't been tripped, make sure that the remote you are using has batteries. If the button you are pressing is hard wired, try pressing the door opener that is attached to the motor. If the motor turns on, but the door won't rise, there could be a problem with the chain or an obstruction in the track.

When Your Garage Door Won't Stay Open

Weakened garage-door springs can cause your garage door to close partially, even when the door is opened all of the way. This can cause a hazard, as the door can close all of the way without warning. Garage doors are heavy, and one that falls on its own is dangerous to anyone standing in the way. If your garage door won't stay open, it's time to call in a repair person to fix the problem with the garage-door springs before someone gets hurt.

When the Track Becomes Warped

Sometimes a bracket will become loose, causing the track to be slightly warped. If you can tell which bracket is loose, attaching the bracket once again should fix the problem. If the track gets bent, this may be harder to fix. For example, if the garage door falls halfway while you are backing out of your garage, you can hit the door pretty hard. This can cause the track to become bent, and a new track might need to be installed.

If you begin noticing that your garage door squeaks, opens roughly, or doesn't stay open all of the way, it's time to have your garage door inspected for potential problems. While you can fix simple things on your own, leave more extensive repairs up to the professionals.
